A little Asbestos History-
Asbestos was regarded, for many years, as an excellent material for these and other practical reasons and was installed in numerous Edinburgh buildings and indeed throughout the entire United Kingdom.
Although the first reported cases of asbestos-related health problems can be found as far back as the 1930s, it was not until the 1980s that direct action was taken on its usage, Firstly by a voluntary ban followed by legislation and eventual total ban in 1999. As part of the Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012), it is a requirement that anyone who is likely to come into direct contact with asbestos-containing material (ACM) through their work-related activities should have received some kind of asbestos awareness training. it is also a requirement to have an asbestos assessment in place prior to the commencement of any such works.
Workers most at risk-
The group of people most likely to come in to contact with asbestos are normally associated with the maintenance or installation of services in buildings. They include, caretakers, plumbers, joiners and electricians, heating and ventilation engineers, fire and security alarm engineers and IT cable installers or engineers. Where major refurbishments or demolition of domestic premises are planned is yet another example where the CAR regulations apply. In these circumstances, an Asbestos Refurbishment/Demolition survey would be required to ensure that no contractors were exposed to asbestos-containing materials during their work. Any asbestos materials detected in such properties usually require the need for Asbestos removal to be conducted prior to work commencing.
